NSW has become the first state to fully roll out the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in July 2018. According to the government, more than 85,000 people with disability in NSW are using the NDIS. At the same period, the final stage of the NDIS roll-out in the Northern Territory has commenced, while Western Australia (WA) becomes the final state to officially join the Scheme. According to the WA Minister for Disability Services, Stephen Dawson, the NDIS is expected to support roughly 39,000 people with disability by 2020.
With the rolling out of NDIS over Australia, this scheme is creating major business opportunities. There were over 17,000 approved providers of services at the end of May 2018, estimated by SoNET Systems according to the data from the NDIS website. Obviously, having so many players in the field and by placing additional buying power in the hands of the participants (or their families), these opportunities will come with fierce competitions and challenges for NDIS providers.* Estimated by SoNET Systems according to the data from NDIA website
To name a few, workforce challenge and cost challenges are the two major ones influencing every aspect of the business.
In Feb 2018, National Disability Services (NDS) released the second edition of Australian Disability Workforce Report, which highlighted workforce risks and painted a picture of a rapidly growing sector that is mainly consisting of part-time workers, over two-fifths of whom are casually employed. Roughly one-quarter of the workforce turns over annually, adding to existing recruitment pressures in this fast-growing industry. These facts make providing consistency service, fewer errors and delays, and information sharing among different individuals harder for the providers.
And the pressure from NDIS price guide is considered to cause a revenue decrease for some providers. One organization in WA said the NDIS would mean a 30% decrease in revenue during the next few years for them. It is reasonable to assume the efficiency of organizations and their effectiveness will become a major success factor.
In this case, organizations should take a fresh look at technology options and adopt an NDIS IT solution to cope with the challenges.
